Most Dangerous Roadways in Georgia
Among these, Interstate 285 (I-285) is widely considered the most dangerous roadway in Georgia. Known as “The Perimeter,” I-285 encircles Atlanta, connecting all the major interstate highways that lead into and out of the city. Despite being only about 64 miles long, I-285 has a notorious reputation for high traffic volume, frequent congestion, and a high number of accidents.
Factors Contributing to Danger on I-285:
- High Traffic Volume: As a major connector for interstates, local traffic, and commercial trucks, I-285 sees heavy use daily.
- Complex Interchanges: The highway has several busy interchanges, particularly at “Spaghetti Junction” where I-285 intersects with I-85, creating a complicated and high-stress driving environment.
- Speeding and Aggressive Driving: Drivers often exceed speed limits, contributing to dangerous driving conditions.
- Frequent Lane Changes: With many drivers needing to switch lanes to access exits, the risk of collisions increases, especially in heavy traffic.
- Accidents Involving Trucks: Due to the high number of trucks using I-285, accidents involving large vehicles are common, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.
The combination of these factors makes I-285 a challenging and often dangerous route for drivers, earning it a reputation as one of the most treacherous highways not just in Georgia, but in the entire country.
