Underaged Driver Hits Cyclist in Pelham Georgia

PELHAM, Ga. – A 13-year-old, along with two others, is facing charges after allegedly taking their parents’ car for a joy ride and striking a bicyclist, resulting in severe injuries, according to reports from a local news source.

The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. on Sunday when the bike accident victim, 60, was riding his bicycle in Pelham. The rider sustained multiple injuries, including four broken ribs, a cracked skull, and a punctured lung, after being hit by the vehicle. He was subsequently hospitalized for treatment, his family reported.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the injured bike rider failed to stop at a stop sign and turned directly in front of the vehicle, which was reportedly driven by the 13-year-old. The car, belonging to the teenager’s parents, had been taken without their knowledge and permission.

Charges have been filed against Jenkins, the 13-year-old driver, and a third individual involved in the incident. He was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign and driving under the influence. The 13-year-old has been charged with driving without a license, while a passenger in the car, also a minor, is facing unspecified charges.

Like in many suburbs, residents are expressing that such tragic incidents might be preventable if more activities and recreational facilities were available for the youths such as in Pelham.

Here are five essential bike riding safety tips when sharing the road with motor vehicles:

  1. Always Wear a Helmet: Wearing a properly fitted helmet is crucial for protecting your head in the event of a crash. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries, so make sure it’s snug, level, and securely fastened.
  2. Be Visible: Make sure you’re visible to drivers, especially in low light or at night. Wear bright, reflective clothing and equip your bike with front and rear lights. Use hand signals to indicate your intentions, such as turning or stopping.
  3. Ride Predictably: Maintain a straight line and avoid sudden swerves or unexpected movements. Ride in a consistent and predictable manner, and obey all traffic signals and signs, just like any other vehicle on the road.
  4. Stay Alert and Avoid Distractions: Keep your focus on the road and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Avoid using headphones or anything that could distract you from hearing or seeing approaching vehicles or other hazards.
  5. Use Bike Lanes and Stay to the Right: Whenever possible, use designated bike lanes. If a bike lane isn’t available, ride as far to the right as is safe, but stay clear of parked car doors that might open unexpectedly. Remember, it’s okay to take the lane if necessary for safety.
